Turkey to launch military operation in Syria

Image
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan says military forces will intervene in northern Syria, after warning the United States it had done too little to expel its Kurdish allies from the border area. Turkey could take matters into its own hands “as soon as today or tomorrow,” Erdogan added. The air and ground military operation will take place east of the Euphrates River in northeastern Syria. While addressing the ruling Justice and Development Party's 29th Consultation and Assessment meeting in Kizilcahaman, Erdogan said the goal of the military operation is to establish peace: "Our aim is, I underline it, to shower east of Euphrates with peace. Turkey has to carry out and succeed in this operation [east of Euphrates] for both its national security and [to ensure] the return of Syrians in Turkey to their own country". The announcement prompted the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to promise “all-out war” if they face an unprovoked attack. The SDF is led...

CR7 feels embarassed by rape allegations

Cristiano Ronaldo, said in an interview on Tuesday that he felt “embarrassed” by the rape allegations against him. The pending civil case by former model Kathryn Mayorga alleges conspiracy, defamation, breach of contract, coercion and fraud. Her complaint seeks unspecified monetary damages greater than $50,000. Police in Las Vegas reopened a criminal investigation last October at the request of Mayorga, who accused Ronaldo of sexual assault in 2009. But police confirmed in June that he won’t face criminal charges. Las Vegas police matched a DNA sample from Ronaldo to evidence from the alleged 2009 rape at a Las Vegas hotel, but detectives said they struggled with uncooperative attorneys for Mayorga before prosecutors declined to pursue a criminal charge, according to correspondence obtained by this past August by ESPN. “They play with your dignity,” Ronaldo told ‘Good Morning Britain’ in an interview with Piers Morgan that will air on Tuesday in Great Britain. “It’s hard. Yo...

Bianca Andreescu's glory day

Bianca Andreescu defeated Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open final on Sunday. The win is the 19-year-old Andreescu’s first career Grand Slam, and the fourth straight loss in a Grand Slam final for Williams. Williams, owner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is one short of Margaret Court’s 24 for a share of the all-time lead. Williams’ last Grand Slam title came at the 2017 Australian Open. Andreescu set the tone early by breaking Williams in the first game of the match, and never relinquished the lead in breaks during the first set. The second set looked like it would a runaway win for Andreescu after she broke Williams twice in a row to take a commanding 5-1 game lead. Williams responded with the fire that has brought her to the brink of history and fought back to tie the set at 5-5. And yet, it was Andreescu’s moment. The Canadian pulled it back together and won the match, completing a meteoric rise in the world of tennis this year. Andreescu began the year ranked outside...
